Editing the rig of a Blender file breaks regular prefabs that use it (this was a long-standing issue that was never fixed). As far as I know, this problem only happens in Blender since its FBX exporter is limited, compared to Autodesk products like Maya and 3dsmax.

But the new Prefab Variant feature in Unity 2018.3 effectively solves this issue because variants keep the "connection" to the blend file intact. This works because Unity treats blend files as prefabs themselves.

Here's how it looks like in Unity. I still have to add fire particle effects over the eyes and torso. #GhostKnightVictis

I'm sure there's a technical hurdle why this is so, but I'm sad that it isn't possible. If my hunch is correct, they probably perform a diff on the serialized text of the prefab to see what's overridden, so reordering components around would diff the wrong things. If so, they could've made the display order of components in the inspector independent of the serialization order.

This is in a prefab variant, and my attempts to reorder the components in the prefab variant asset itself doesn't work.
