Character 3D face rigging is a very long and time consuming process, done by the riggers. In the last century the rigger was known as the fellow who took care for the ropes on his captain ship, but today character riggers are the lads who uses software solutions to create face skeletons made of bones that also includes rigging the face of that particular character.

The facial rigging is a whole world to it self. In this case the traditional joints and blend shapes used in animation of the other body parts don’t work well here, maybe except for the jaw bone. The nature of the movement on the face animation and facial expression is more of a flow then it is a morph. There is also the issue of the skin weight cause this movements needs to feel scratchy and natural. Cause all of this facial rigging usually requires deformers and blend shapes which furthermore adds to complexity of the process.
